UN Security Council sanctions more North Korean entities

"That enduring commitment is based on strategic interests and on shared values", said James Mattis, speaking at an annual Asian security conference in Singapore.

The US has been the strongest military power in the Asia-Pacific since World War II. "What a crummy world if we all retreat inside our borders".

He continued on to say: "We're working diplomatically, economically, we're trying to exhaust all possible alternatives to avert this race for a nuclear weapon in violation of ... the United Nations' restrictions on North Korea's activities".

This was the first resolution that both the U.S. and China, one of North Korea's allies, have agreed upon since U.S. President Donald Trump entered the Oval Office.

China rejects the suggestion that the job of reining in North Korea rests with it alone.

Apart from using the US alliance to tackle its belligerent neighbour, Japan also wants the military partnership to exert influence on other parts of Asia, including the highly contested South China Sea, Inada said.

On Friday, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution drafted by the United States to expand the scope of sanctions, travel bans and asset freezes against North Korea.

North Korea on Sunday slammed the latest round of United Nations sanctions as "mean" and vowed to press ahead with its missile and nuclear weapons programs.

A French amphibious assault carrier visited Japan in April after sailing through the South China Sea.

President Trump called the North Korean attempts to gain a nuclear arsenal an imminent threat to the United States and has repeatedly called on the north's biggest ally to do more to stop their nuclear testing.

Mattis in his speech titled "The United States and Asia- Pacific Security" also expressed reservation about Chinese actions that impinge on the interests of the global community.

"We are going to have to work together", Mattis said.

Mattis said the U.S. commitment to defend longtime allies South Korea and Japan from any North Korean military threat was "ironclad".

"Whatever sanctions and pressure may follow, we will not flinch from the road to build up nuclear forces which was chosen to defend the sovereignty of the country and the rights to national existence and will move forward towards the final victory", a foreign ministry spokesman told the state-run KCNA news agency, according to Reuters.

"We desire productive relationships, but we can not allow China to use its economic power to buy its way out of other problems, whether it's militarizing islands in the South China Sea or failing to put appropriate pressure on North Korea", he said.

Without giving details, Mattis also said the United States would take further steps to protect the USA homeland.
