N.Irish unionists agree 'confidence' deal with Tories

"Having secured the largest number of votes and the greatest number of seats in the General Election it is clear that only the Conservative and Unionist party has the legitimacy and ability to provide that certainty by commanding a majority in the House of Commons".

Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) agreed in principle to a "confidence and supply" deal with the Conservative Party, a Downing Street statement said Saturday.

Sinn Fein's Michelle O'Neill said a deal between the Conservatives and the DUP would "betray the interests" of the people of Northern Ireland.

Barwell was one of the Conservative lawmakers who lost his seat in Thursday's election, which saw the party lose its parliamentary majority.

"I and the rest of my colleagues will do whatever we can to give the country the strong opposition and prospective Government it deserves". "For as long as Corbyn leads Labour, we will ensure there's a Tory PM", the Guardian quoted a DUP source.

The DUP won 10 seats, meaning that they will have 10 MPs representing them in Parliament.

Timothy and Hill were blamed by many Conservatives for the party's lackluster campaign and unpopular election platform, which alienated older voters with its plan to make them pay more for long-term care.

Apart from the defeat of the Conservatives, the important trend is the rise of the Labour party, led by Jeremy Corbyn, who is sure that soon May will be replaced and the Labour party will prevail.

About 41 per cent said Ms May should resign "immediately", while 20 per cent believed she should leave within the next six months, and 23 per cent said only after negotiating Brexit.

"There has been a lot of hyperbole about the DUP since Thursday, a lot of things said, a lot of people who really don't know what we stand for", DUP leader Arlene Foster told Sky News.

She called the early election with her party comfortably ahead in the polls in the hope of increasing her majority and strengthening Britain's hand in exit talks with the European Union.

"I think its quite possible there'll be an election later this year or early next year, and that might be a good thing, because we can not go on with a period of great instability", he told the BBC's Andrew Marr on Sunday.

At the same time Ruth Davidson, leader of the Conservatives in Scotland - where the party reversed the trend in England and gained MPs - has called for a new approach building cross-party support for an "open Brexit".

She added: "This new arrangement between the DUP and the Tories will be transitory and will end in tears".

Corbyn was in good spirits as he declared his party's election result "incredibly good" - even if they did fall well short of gaining power.

Meanwhile Mr Corbyn insisted "I can still be Prime Minister" as he vowed to fight Mrs May's attempt to run a minority government "all the way".

"That's going to make it hard for the European Union 27 because they're going to want to know who they're talking to and what their policy is".
