Britain's May seeks deal with Northern Ireland party to cling to power

As rumors swirled about plots to oust May, Johnson denied he was planning a leadership challenge.

"I don't think she does have a majority in the House of Commons for leaving the single market", said Anna Soubry, a Conservative member of parliament who campaigned ahead of last year's referendum for Britain to stay in the EU. "Let's get on with the job", Johnson responded on Twitter.

May would have been able to form a government without support from the Democratic Unionist Party, which won 10 seats if Conservatives seized four seats from Labour - Dudley North (22 majority); Newcastle-under-Lyme (30 majority); Crew and Nantwich (48 majority); and Canterbury (187 majority).

Negotiations with Brussels on the UK's departure from the European Union are due to start on 19 June, and Mrs May is now seeking the backing of the Democratic Unionist Party to prop up her minority government.

Davidson was one of the few Conservative success stories in the election as the Scottish wing of the party won 13 seats.

Asked if Yvette Cooper and Chuka Umunna - both of whom had been reported to be planning leadership bids if Labour lost seats in the general election - could come back to the front bench, Corbyn said: "I am the most generous person in the world".

In the midst of such chaos, Jeremy Corbyn appeared on the Andrew Marr Show - a weekly British politics show - confident and upbeat about his party's chances to make up even more ground on their conservative rivals. A petition on Change.org had more than half a million signatures by Saturday afternoon, calling for May's resignation over her alliance with the DUP.

"They can't have a leadership contest in the next nine days". Some say her failure means the government must now take a more flexible approach to the divorce, potentially softening the exit terms.

"I don't think throwing us into a leadership battle at this moment in time, when we are about to launch into these hard negotiations, would be in the best interests of the country", Evans said.

She announced on Saturday evening that her party's chief whip had agreed to an outline deal "in principle" with the DUP of Northern Ireland, which would see the unionist party support the Tories on key votes.

The DUP today (Saturday) held discussions with representatives of the Conservative Party in line with Arlene Foster's commitment to explore how we might bring stability to the nation at this time of great challenge, the party said in its own statement.

May's office added that the Cabinet will discuss the agreement Monday.

The two sides are looking to form a "confidence and supply" arrangement.

Critics outside the Tory party warn that any deal with the DUP could compromise the British government's impartiality in Northern Ireland and jeopardise 20 years of peace.

The spokesman indicated this would not be a formal coalition but a minority government with looser DUP support on a "confidence and supply basis".

Others have also said a Conservative-DUP deal could endanger Northern Ireland's peace settlement, which relies on the British government being a neutral arbiter between those who want the province to remain in the United Kingdom and those who want it to become part of the Republic of Ireland.

"It would be nothing short of scandalous if the Tory party jeopardised the return of government in Northern Ireland and the Good Friday process in order to cling on to power at Westminster".

"We will - obviously - amend the Queen's Speech".

"This is still on", he said, adding he would vote down the government's programme when it comes before parliament this month.

Leave-backing Conservative MP Dominic Raab told the Sunday Politics the country was "quite clear that they want us to make a success of Brexit".
