Oracle beats Kiwis to earn America's Cup match bonus point

June 3 Oracle Team USA ensured they will start their defence of the America's Cup with a crucial extra point by beating Emirates Team New Zealand and Britain's Land Rover BAR to win the qualifier event on Saturday.

"We were really happy with the start", Artemis Racing skipper Nathan Outteridge said in a televised interview following his crew's victory over Oracle Team USA who remained on seven points, level with the New Zealand team.

It figures that the new-look qualifiers would come down to a showdown between the two powerhouse rivals that will forever be linked by the epic 2013 America's Cup. "The forecast is great and I think it will be one hell of a race".

It was a second defeat of the day for Groupama, who had lost by almost six minutes to SoftBank earlier Thursday.

The display followed on from an earlier effort in their first race, against SoftBank Team Japan, when they managed a “measly” 99.6 per cent flight time.

The Team NZ choice leaves Sweden's Artemis Racing and SoftBank Team Japan as the other semi-final opponents.

Having failed to progress to the Louis Vuitton America's Cup Challenger Playoffs, Franck Cammas' team would have hoped to cause one last shock and beat the Swedish team for a second time.

There was even better to come as New Zealand became the first team to achieve an official "perfect" race, foiling around the entire course without touching their hulls down to beat France by 4 minutes, 6 seconds.

Their chances of earning the right to challenge Oracle Team USA in the America's Cup finale are "likely to depend on whether they can sort out their issues at either end of the wind range", agrees the Daily Telegraph.

Top U.S. diplomat David Rank in China has resigned following President Trump's decision to pull out of the Paris Climate Accord . Rank joined the State Department in 1990 and served in a variety of roles including in Afghanistan, Greece, and Mauritius.

Barker was asked if Team Japan was allowed to beat Oracle.

Both Team New Zealand and BAR are sitting out on the water in the shade, having a snack and waiting to see if conditions change but for now, there is no racing.

Oracle, meanwhile, had to quickly fix a broken rudder before its race against Artemis Racing of Sweden.

Today's races will now be held tomorrow on what was to have been a lay day.

"That gets us all hungry and makes us want to reward the guys on shore".

Sir Ben Ainslie and Land Rover BAR sailed smoothly throughout the race but, having fallen behind their opponents at the start, the British team could never quite close the gap as the race progressed.

Peter Burling will have Ben Ainslie in his sights, with two races today to begin to cement their place against the victor of the second semi-final tie - Artemis v Team Japan.

The eventual victor of that stage of the competition will then become the official Challenger to Oracle Team USA for the 35th America's Cup.
