Twitter users, blocked by President Trump, cry censorship

Dealing with President Donald Trump's more outlandish comments has "a learning curve for everyone around the world" - but, that doesn't me he should stop Tweeting, Miss USA says.

"Though the architects of the Constitution surely didn't contemplate presidential Twitter accounts, they understood that the president must not be allowed to banish views from public discourse simply because he finds them objectionable", Jameel Jaffer, executive director of the Knight Institute, said in the Times story.

Nearly immediately, she was blocked from his account.

The letter implies that if the Trump administration does not comply and unblock designated users, the users will consider suing the administration. So, by blocking people on Twitter, Trump is effectively removing the radio from his version of FDR's fireside chats, or more accurately, closing the door of a Town Hall meeting to everyone except people who agree with or say nice things about him.

Because when it comes to the President's Twitter account, well, that's a little different.

But the Knight Institute argues that Trump's personal account - where he is prone to express his own, spur-of-the-moment thoughts, is also a public account, even though Trump established the handle when he was a private citizen and then when he was a candidate. Twitter may be a public forum, but the account belongs to the individual. The president also inherited the @potus account from President Obama. A look at Trump's recent Twitter activity is an eye-opening mishmash of self-congratulatory statements and attacks on others, while he remains firmly silent about the mounting controversies that threaten his very presidency.

Security Council after Pyongyang conducted a ninth ballistic missile test this year in defiance of earlier U.N. resolutions. North Korea on Sunday denounced the new sanctions imposed two days earlier by the U.N.

Finally, the letter notes that while the government can regulate the space, they cannot outright ban users because of a difference of opinion. And since his account, like others, provides the opportunity for a response, some think that would make it a kind of public forum. "God, you're embarrassing." wrote O'Reilly.

And even in a public form, McConnell said, presidents can "go to public arenas and meet with audiences of their choice".

Adbo, though, argued that an important part of the public forum is the exchange of ideas.

However, apart from praises and accusations there was nearly nothing of effect that the president tweeted about. Reuters noted that the account blocked users after they posted content that "criticized, mocked or disagreed" with the president. A search on Twitter shows a numerous people claiming to be blocked.

Is the president's Twitter account "a public forum where interactive free expression is expected or more like a newsletter, where the communication is all one way?" If applied to the president however, a court ruling could trickle down to Congress and local politicians.

As of early Wednesday morning, the White House had not responded to the Institute's letter.
