Germany to pull troops from Turkish base

In a May 17 interview, the German Foreign Minister criticized Turkey's decision to block a German delegation from visiting Bundeswehr (The unified armed forces of Germany) soldiers stationed at Turkey's Incirlik base. The parliament is yet to approve the end of the deployment.

Germany is set to withdraw troops and aircraft taking part in missions against the ISIS from Turkey in a major diplomatic row between the two North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) allies.

The military personnel, Tornado surveillance jets and other hardware-deployed as part of the worldwide coalition against the self-styled Islamic State terrorist group-will be moved to Jordan's Asraq base instead, said Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen, the German website Local.de reported.

Germany has had more than 250 troops stationed in Incirlik, flying surveillance missions over Syria and refuelling flights for partner nations battling the IS jihadists. German officials have said that completing the transfer of the Tornados could take up to two months, though the refueling plane could be moved in two weeks.

"Above all, we should organize the withdrawal so that there is no megaphone diplomacy where we trade insults", Gabriel told Deutschlandfunk radio on Tuesday.

"We have no interest in pushing Turkey into a corner. we don't want to push it towards Russia", Gabriel said.

But Germany's foreign minister failed to break the current impasse during a visit to Ankara Monday.

"There is no decision we have taken on this. They can have it their own way", Yıldırım told reporters on June 6 at parliament.

"It has no effect on North Atlantic Treaty Organisation activities", he said. Merkel has criticized Turkey's record on human rights and press freedom, and Turkey alleges that Germany is shielding fugitives suspected of involvement in the coup. According to Deutsche Welle, Turkey's was allegedly in response to the German government's decision in early May to grant asylum to Turkish military personnel. "We say we are ready for that. but you have to move, too", said Gabriel, who stressed that adhering to the rule of law was necessary. Ankara also targeted journalists, academicians, judges and other key figures in the country in what Germany sees as a major step away from democracy. That snub seemed to be a tit-for-tat result of Angela Merkel's refusal to extradite Turkish citizens in Germany who Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is accusing of being supporters of last year's attempted coup. Turkey remains a key country - member of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation in the Middle East.
