Trump wants Mideast peace 'compromise' but admits won't be easy

Trump added that the State of Israel was a "strong and soaring monument to the solemn pledge we repeat and affirm "Never again".

Trump spoke beside Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, after the two held a private meeting to discuss the now-stalled peace process and Trump's vision for broad counterterrorism cooperation among the United States, Israel and the Muslim world.

US President Donald Trump called on Israelis and Palestinians to make compromises for peace on Tuesday as he wrapped up a closely watched visit, but offered no specifics on how he would resolve the decades-old conflict. Trump's comments came after he made the short trip from Jerusalem to Bethlehem to meet Abbas, who sought to convince the unpredictable USA president to remain committed to an independent Palestinian state.

On Monday he stated, "t$3 here are many things that can happen now that could never have happened before" as he delivered a public statement alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that followed a face-to-face meeting. "There's a lot of love out there".

It is important to note that Trump has previously used similar terms for some of his critics - whom he calls his "enemies" - including comedian Rosie O'Donnell, singer Cher, former presidential hopeful Jeb Bush, former White House Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove and journalist Chuck Todd to name a few.

This "fixation" on Iran and its threats to regional peace and stability can not be a substitute for real efforts to solve the ongoing regional conflicts, beginning with the Palestinian problem and ending with the six-year-old bloody civil war in Syria.

The visit follows an initial leg in Saudi Arabia, where he urged Islamic leaders to confront extremism.

Israel occupied the West Bank, including east Jerusalem, in the Six-Day War of 1967.

"In this spirit of hope, we come to Bethlehem, asking God for more peaceful, safe and far more tolerant world for all of us", Mr. Trump said.

Trump's remarks came during his first foreign trip as president, a sweep of five countries over nine days.

He also called on the Israeli government to meet the demands of Palestinian hunger strikers. The goal of Trump's trip, the official said, was "to do a lot of listening, build very strong relationships with all the different people, not just the parties involved. and try to create a lot of momentum and optimism around the prospect for peace". It promised Arab recognition of Israel in exchange for a Palestinian state. He has since said the move was still being looked at. As the first sitting president to visit the Western Wall - the second holiest site in Judaism - Trump scored with Israelis on rhetorical, visual and historic fronts. In the wake of that decision, he praised Trump's decision to visit the holy site.

After Israel and the Palestinian territories, Mr Trump will head to the Vatican, and to Brussels and Italy for North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and G-7 meetings. He was not accompanied by any Israeli leaders during the visit.

The last talks between the Israelis and Palestinians, led by former US secretary of state John Kerry, broke down in April 2014 after around a year of largely fruitless discussion. The Palestinians see east Jerusalem as the capital of their future state.
