Chicago Loses Population For 3rd Consecutive Year

Charleston's population continues to decline. "But year to year, it's a lot of static, a lot of noise". This most recent set of data provides local population estimates broken down by governmental unit; in other words, the various counties, parishes, cities and towns across the country that are governed by their own council, commission or other entity.

That is according to a new population estimates released Thursday (May 25) by the U.S. Census Bureau.

It's not just about "providing talent for the companies", Considine said, "but also providing the opportunities for the people".

Four of the top five cities the Census Bureau highlighted as the fastest-growing are in Texas. Still, the decrease surprised him.

Chelsea is seeing new home growth due to demand, he said. "But I agree with the overall trend that they are showing and that is that we aren't having the declines that occurred say from 2000 to 2010". Houston's population rose 0.81 percent to 2,284,816.

Morgantown now is West Virginia's third-largest city, with its population estimate rising by 147 people past year. In 2015, the population dropped an estimated 4,934 people and the year before just 357.

Birmingham has seen population swing by small numbers each year since 2010, and the latest figures show the city lost a little more than one person per day from 2015 to 2016. Lake Forest's population has been nearly flat, gaining just six residents past year and losing only nine since 2010. Census estimates put its 2016 population at roughly 13,500. But job and business opportunities are still stronger in neighboring Midwestern states than in IL, sending more Chicagoans to other parts of the Midwest than vice versa, experts said.

Elizabeth Schuh, principal policy analyst at the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, said that although it didn't lose as many people as populous Cook County a year ago, Lake County is still experiencing trends that mirror the stagnant or even negative growth in the region.

Chelsea is joined by Helena, Calera, Trussville and Moody among the top 10 fastest growing cities in Alabama from 2015 to 2016. That growth includes adding 224 residents between 2015 and 2016.

The census data suggests 50 people moved out of OR to other communities and Maumee lost 61 residents.

Penn Hills' loss was the most significant. It lost 525 people a year ago, bringing its population estimate down to 48,113. Penn Hills officials could not be reached for comment.

Charleston's population was at its highest, with more than 85,000 people living in the city, during the 1960 census.

Estimates do have a margin of error, sometimes as high as a few hundred people.
