Rebel Wilson's defamation trial against publisher begins

On day one of a defamation trial in Victoria state's Supreme Court, Wilson's barrister Matthew Collins told the jury that Bauer Media "tore down an Australian star to sell magazines".

According to courtroom reports, Wilson is saying that she was sacked from at least two movies and has been unable to find work since Bauer's campaign of eight articles was published back in 2015.

The jury was told Wilson's real name was Melanie Elizabeth Bownds, but her mother had always wanted to name her Rebel, after a six-year-old who had sung at her parents' wedding.

Hollywood movie star Rebel Wilson has rapped a hallucinated Oscar acceptance speech in court.

The "Bridesmaids" actress is suing publisher Bauer Media over a series of articles that appeared in May 2015.

Wilson has taken the stand in the Supreme Court in Melbourne to give evidence about her "bogan" upbringing in Sydney's north-west and the devastating impact of the articles.

She told reporters she had not been able to audition for movies because of her pending trial.

She denied claims from Bauer's defence counsel that the articles, which she says portrayed her as a serial liar and a fake, were light-hearted in tone and had no serious effect on her.

Although the kidnapping of the Chibok girls caught global attention, Boko Haram has kidnapped thousands of adults and children. He emphasized, though, that he considered all 82 of the girls to be his daughters "because majority worship in my church".

"These articles were a deliberate malicious take-down of me", the actress testified.

After finishing high school, Wilson took a gap year in South Africa, where she claims to have contracted malaria, a story which the magazine articles cast doubt on.

She said her agents had simply advised her to stop mentioning her age because "Hollywood is very ageist, especially towards women". "She thought she'd never been hit with such nastiness, coincided to time with the pinnacle of her career", Collins stated.

The trial's expected to run for three weeks.

Georgina Schoff QC, who is representing the publisher, alleges the articles were true and also so trivial that they were unlikely to cause any harm.

It was more important to ensure the process of justice was not undermined.

She even smirked when the judges' associate revealed one of the jury contestants was, indeed, a magazine editor.

'People really warmed to my character Fat Amy, ' she said. "It must be terrifying".
