North Korea Links Nuclear Advances to Hostile US Policy

The agreement came after North Korea conducted its latest ballistic missile test Sunday, claiming the US was within its sights and it had the capability to fire a large nuclear warhead.

White House officials traveling in Saudi Arabia with President Donald Trump said the system that was tested, which was last launched in February, had a shorter range than the missiles fired in North Korea's most recent tests.

The Japanese government also said North Korea fired a "missile", according to the Kyodo news service which cited an unnamed government source. This story is breaki.

North Korea launched a ballistic missile on Sunday, according to USA and South Korean officials.

Hong also held a separate one-on-one meeting with National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster to discuss pending issues between the two countries, including nuclear and missile tensions with North Korea and the deployment of THAAD.

On May 14, North Korea successfully launched what was believed to be a new type of missile that flew for about 700 kilometers before plunging into the Sea of Japan close to Russian Federation.

Analysts said the missile represented a significant advancement in the North's weapons capabilities as it continues efforts to develop an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capable of delivering a nuclear warhead to the continental United States.

A South Korean military official declined to confirm the report but said the military was analysing the launch.

Pyongyang has long had missiles that can reach targets across the South and Japan.

The reclusive state has been working to develop a nuclear-tipped missile capable of striking the US mainland.

Moon took office eleven days ago after winning an election on a platform of a more moderate approach to the North, with which the South is still technically at war since no peace treaty was signed at the end of their 1950-1953 conflict. He said North Korea would never abandon its "nuclear deterrence for self-defense and pre-emptive strike capability" even if the US ratchets up sanctions and pressure "to the utmost".

Researchers in the US, Russia and Israel have also pointed to a potential North Korean link - but it is notoriously hard to attribute cyberattacks.

The launch early on Sunday took place at a region named Kusong, where the North previously test-launched an intermediate-range missile it is believed to be developing.

"Our military is closely monitoring the North Korean military for any further provocation and maintaining readiness to respond".

Moon won this month's election on a platform of a moderate approach to North Korea and has said he would be willing to go to Pyongyang under the right circumstances, arguing dialogue must be used in parallel with sanctions.
