CROP PROGRESS: Corn planting hits 71% versus 70% average; soybeans at 32%

Proving yet again what a resilient bunch farmers are, corn and soybean plantings are now ahead of the average pace after growers kicked it into high gear last week. This allowed farmers to plant one-third of the state's expected 2017 corn acreage and just under one-third of the state's expected soybean acreage.

CBOT brokers reported that funds sold 3,000 contracts of Wheat while buying 1,500 contracts of Corn, and 4,300 contracts of Soybean. The dry and warm weather also aided crop emergence.

IL corn planting went to 75% completed versus 65% last week but was short of the five-year average of 77%. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 3 percent very short, 14 short, 79 adequate, and 4 surplus. Eighty-four percent of the state's corn crop is now planted, 46 percent of its soybeans and 93 percent of its spring wheat.

Making up for IL and IN, however, is Iowa where 85% of corn and 40% of soybeans were sown, easily topping the respective averages of 75% and 32%, USDA data show. Looking at soybeans for 2017, USDA says 42% has been planted, one day behind a year ago, but two days ahead of average. IL rated its emerged corn 7% excellent, 35% good, 42% fair, 13% poor and 3% very poor. Oats emerged reached 85%, three days ahead of average.

Pasture and range conditions rated 0 percent very poor, 3 poor, 29 fair, 59 good, and 9 excellent. Statewide, the average temperature was 62.7 degrees, 1.2 degrees above normal. Showers and thunderstorms were scattered over the southwest one-half of Iowa the morning of May 8, with locally heavy rain of 1 to 2 inches near Denison southeast to Creston. "There were 6.4 days suitable for fieldwork", North Dakota said.
