Murray bows out as Nadal, Djokovic march on in Madrid

World number one Andy Murray is out of the Madrid Open after he lost in straight sets to Borna Coric in the last 16.

It continues a fine run for the Croatian, who is only featuring in Madrid because Richard Gasquet pulled out of the draw with a back injury, after he won his first ATP title in Marrakech last month.

He later surrendered his serve in the seventh game, giving Coric three break points.

"I started the match OK but when I started to go behind I didn't find any way to improve my game or to make it more hard for him, I just let the same things keep happening".

"It's not always the worst thing losing a match, but it's sometimes the manner of how you lose the match which can be concerning or disappointing".

"Most things weren't working particularly well".

UK PM Theresa May talks Brexit with French President-Elect Emmanuel Macron
This has alienated many left-wing voters in what could explain a historically low turnout in Sunday's vote. Francis Kalifat, president of CRIF, called the victory "incontestable" and congratulated Macron on it.

The 20-year-old broke his British opponent three times in the opening set before a solitary break in the second was enough to secure his second victory over the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympic champion, having also beaten him at the Dubai Championships in 2015.

In between crashing out of the Monte Carlo Masters to Albert Ramos-Vinolas last month and arriving in Madrid, Murray had shown some signs of finding his form by reaching the semi-finals at the Barcelona Open.

Novak Djokovic overcame stiff resistance from Feliciano Lopez to book his place in the quarter-finals with a 6-4, 7-5 win. "That's even more when I said (to myself): "I'm going to make even more balls, I'm going to make him play" and just see what's going to happen".

After suffering his own struggles of late, Djokovic was encouraged by his display in seeing off Lopez and a partisan crowd to reach the last eight.

At 3-4 there seemed no undue cause for concern from the Scot's point of view but then he threw in a slew of groundstroke errors to be broken, and there was an absence of any fightback as Coric served it out.

Nadal meets David Goffin in the quarter-finals on Friday after the Belgian beat Milos Raonic 6-4 6-2, while Djokovic will play Japanese sixth seed Kei Nishikori, who saw off David Ferrer of Spain 6-4 6-3.
