82 freed schoolgirls to meet Nigerian president

The presidential spokesman said the girls were received at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja on Sunday by the Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari, on behalf of President Muhammadu Buhari.

President Muhammadu Buhari's government said several security agencies, the Swiss government, Red Cross, the military, and several NGOs had been involved in the "lengthy negotiations".

On April 14, 2014, Boko Haram abducted 219 girls at their dormitory while preparing for the college final examination at Chibok town in Nigeria's northeast Borno State.

Dr Mali Gubio, the Secretary of the forum told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiduguri that credit must go to President Muhammad Buhari.

After Saturday's release, 113 schoolgirls remain unaccounted for. Two other girls made their way to government-controlled areas later in the year, and a group of 21 captives was released in October.

The group of girls, released Saturday, had been kidnapped in 2014 in the town of Chibok near Nigeria's borders with Chad and Niger.

Five Boko Haram commanders were released in exchange for the freedom of 82 Chibok schoolgirls, a Nigerian government official said Sunday.

Nigeria's president says he will meet Sunday with 82 Chibok schoolgirls freed this weekend after being kidnapped three years ago by Boko Haram.
