Trump seeks to upgrade US government IT services

The White House established Monday the American Technology Council - a group of Cabinet members and other senior-level officials and technology leaders designated by the president to drive the vision for federal digital services and IT.

The American Technology Council will host a summit with about 20 executives from the technology industry to talk strategy in early June, Axios reports. The council's goal, it says, is to promote policies that help the federal government "transform and modernize its information technology and how it uses and delivers digital services".

" Americans deserve better digital services from their Government".

Trump has held a number of meetings with top tech chief executives since becoming president, including Apple Inc, Facebook Inc, Alphabet Inc, IBM Corp, Microsoft Inc, and Tesla Inc.

The GAO report informs that USA government IT investments "are becoming progressively outdated: many use outdated software languages and hardware parts that are unsupported".

"For example", the report said, "Department of Defense uses 8-inch floppy disks in a legacy system that coordinates the operational functions of the nation's nuclear forces". US taxpayers' data is also processed with systems more than 50 years old.
