No need for Trump's approval to use massive bomb

The U.S. military for the first time Thursday dropped one of its largest conventional weapons - a massive 21,000-pound bomb nicknamed the "Mother of All Bombs" - on an Islamic State tunnel complex in Afghanistan.

Dubbed the "Mother Of All Bombs", the GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast bomb was unleashed in combat for the first time Thursday, hitting IS positions in a remote, rugged area of eastern Nangarhar province.

"This is the right weapon against this target".

The statement said it is the responsibility of Afghans, not the U.S., to remove Islamic State from the country.

District Gov. Ismail Shinwari said there is no civilian property near the airstrike location.

General John Nicholson, the commander of USA forces in Afghanistan, said the bomb was "the right munition" to use against Isis because of the group's use of roadside bombs, bunkers and tunnels.

"The more we can turn over the ground fighting to Afghan forces and provide friendly air", the better, Stewart told Business Insider. The U.S. forces in Afghanistan, about 8,000-strong, are involved with their Afghan counterparts in military operations against ISIS in the Nangarhar area, as well as against Taliban insurgents operating in the country.

The Chief Executive of Afghanistan, Abdullah Abdullah, said the attack had been carried out in co-ordination with his government and "great care had been taken to avoid civilian harm". A 300 meter long tunnel, along with large amounts of light and heavy weapons and munition were destroyed in the bombing, the Afghan defence ministry said Friday.

'Mother of all bombs' killed 36 ISIS fighters, Afghan official says

The massive bomb was dropped after fighting intensified over the past week and US-backed ground forces struggled to advance on the area. "But the next morning we came to know that the U.S. had dropped a huge bomb on a militants' base in the bordering Achin district of Nangarhar that caused the tremors", said a tribal elder.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said he approved of the strike, and it was created to support Afghan and United States forces conducting clearance operations in the region.

In a video posted by US Central Command's official Twitter handle, one can see the exact moment of impact and the huge cloud of smoke that rises following the explosion.

In the footage, the bomb can be seen streaking down from the sky and onto the valley of a mountain. In the past year, they have largely concentrated on thwarting a surge of attacks by the Taliban, who have captured key districts, such as Helmand province, which USA and British troops had fought bitterly to return to the government.

"They killed our women, youths and elders, sitting them on mines", Hakim added.

Ataullah Khogyani, spokesman for the provincial governor in Nangarhar, said the number of Islamic State group dead was up from the 36 reported a day earlier.

Nicholson said the USA conducted "persistent surveillance over the area before during and after the operation" and that there had been no evidence of civilians hit in the strike.

President Trump had praised the U.S. military after it dropped the GBU-43 bomb in Afghanistan, calling the mission "a great success".
