Apple makes its own fake sweat to test out new products

While transitioning to 100% recycled materials is critical to reducing the sector's footprint, it is also fundamental for Apple and other major IT companies to design products that last, are easy to fix, and recyclable at their end of life.

Apple has released its 2017 Environmental Responsibility Report, outlining details throughout fiscal year 2016 on the company's efforts in making all of its operations more eco-friendly. Seven major Apple suppliers have, for instance, promised to exclusively use renewable energy by the close of 2018. After months of research, the company came to the conclusion that the aluminum to be used for manufacturing new products should come from Apple products only, rather than recycling facilities due to their high-end quality, as per DailyMail.

Earth Day is on April 22.

Despite these successes, Apple admits that there is still a long way to go.

"We're actually doing something we rarely do, which is announce a goal before we've completely figured out how to do it", Lisa Jackson, Apple SVP of environmental policy told Vice.

In 2016, Apple sourced 96 per cent of the energy used at its global facilities from renewables, helping to reduce its carbon emissions by nearly 585,000 metric tonnes - according to the report.

As one of the biggest tech company in the world, the company knows it can play a big part is preserving nature, and promoting green environment.

Apple plans to close supply chain loops and produce its devices entirely from recycled materials and "renewable resources" in the future.

Not to mention Apple's new corporate headquarters, Apple Park, will be powered exclusively by renewables.

"For companies like Apple, usually 80 percent or more of the carbon footprint is in the supply chain".

Apple is now 100 per cent renewable in 24 countries, including all of its data centres.

"And, of course, it's powered by 100 percent renewable energy", she says.

If you weren't impressed by the technology behind the Apple products, here's another reason for you to be star struck by the company.

Nevertheless, the firm is "using 100 per cent recycled tin in logic boards for the iPhone 6S", the website adds, as well as recycling "aluminium reclaimed from old iPhone 6 models to make Mac Minis for iPhone assembly lines".

The multi-billion dollar company is melting down iPhones, which are returned by customers for recycling, to make minicomputers used in its factories.

The company has also taken an array of visible steps toward corporate responsibility, from cutting the power demand of its products, to eradicating unsafe materials from its products, to attempting to address the problem of conflict minerals.
