'Avatar' sequels now scheduled to start in December 2020

Cameron set the release dates for the next four “Avatar” sequels, with the first coming in 2020. "So we're not making Avatar 2, we're making Avatar 2, 3, 4, and 5", he said.

The franchise will take a three-year break before returning to the screen with two more installments, on December 20, 2024 and December 19, 2025 respectively.

The next four Avatar movies will launch in December of 2020, 2021, 2024 and 2025, according to a post on the movie's official Facebook page.

The first sequel had originally been due out in 2018 but Cameron said this year that it would not be possible to make the original deadline.

The first Avatar from writer-director James Cameron was released in 2009.

Describing the epic time-frame of production last month, he added: 'I know where I'm going to be for the next eight years of my life. We're full tilt boogie right now. It's pretty exciting stuff.

While pre-production on the sequels - which will all be made at the same time - is now in full swing, Avatar actress Sigourney Weaver confirmed earlier this month that the actual filming of the new films will commence later this year. "But we have to preserve a certain amount of showmanship and we're going to draw that curtain when the time is right".
