1st tropical depression of season forms far from land

The first named tropical storm of 2017 has formed, but officials say it poses no threat to the Sunshine State.

Arlene is expected to be absorbed by a large extratropical storm and dissipate Friday. Maximum sustained winds are also much farther from the center, while the strongest winds in a tropical storm are close to the center.

The arrival of Tropical Depression 1 is a reminder that hurricane season is around the corner.

Winds are 45 miles-per-hour, and Arlene is expected to dissipate on Friday. Tropical storm-force winds were extending out about 105 miles from the storm's center, the hurricane center said.

Storms that form early in the year outside of the deep tropics are not a foreshadowing to a busier hurricane season, Klotzbach said.

Recently, though, some have started to look at whether the warming of the ocean waters that fuel tropical systems might stretch the hurricane season out.
