More mudslides in Colombia kill at least 17 people

The landslides happened after the monthly average of rain fell in one night, the city's mayor said.

Colombia's deadliest landslide, the 1985 Armero disaster, killed more than 20,000.

President Juan Manuel Santos tried to visit the disaster-struck region, but bad weather reportedly forced him to land 200km away in Medellin, the Associated Press reported.

According to Cardona, at least 70 families have been affected by the series of mudslides that were set off by heavy rains of Wednesday morning.

For the second time this month, extreme rainfall caused flooding in one of Colombia's cities, killing at least two in Manizales.

Teams from the Colombian armed forces, civil defense, firefighters and Red Cross * a href="https://newswire.storyful.com/storylines/*/stories/164517" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" *searched for survivors and started clean-up efforts on Wednesday and Thursday.

The country is still recovering after floods killed at least 300 in the town of Mocoa, located in southern Colombia.

The deal, now in its first stage, has been repeatedly delayed. "Among the evacuees are about 700 pro-Syrian regime fighters". Residents of Madaya and Zabadani, formerly summer resorts, joined the 2011 uprising against President Bashar Assad.

Classes in Manizales - where some 400,000 people live - as well as water, electricity and gas services in affected neighbourhoods were suspended as a precaution.

"The situation in Manizales is very worrying".

Authorities monitored several hillsides that showed risk of collapse and evacuated residents, said Jorge Eduardo Rojas, Colombia's transportation minister.

The forecast is for at least another two days of rain in the area.

Even in a country where rains, a mountainous landscape and informal construction combine to make landslides a common occurrence, the scale of the Mocoa disaster was daunting compared with recent tragedies, including a 2015 landslide that killed almost 100 people.
