ICE Arrests Jump In Early Months Of Trump Administration

The first few months of Donald Trump's presidency have seen a dramatic jump in the number of arrests made by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency-an alarming confirmation of the administration's efforts to target undocumented immigrant communities.

ICE arrested 15 percent more immigrants with criminal convictions during President Donald Trump's first weeks in office than the same time period previous year.

Agents arrested 21,362 illegal immigrants, majority convicted criminals, from January 20 through March 13.

Additionally, the Washington Post's report indicating the biggest spike reported in the arrests of immigrants without criminal records, that number has actually gone down locally.

"ICE ‶focuses its enforcement resources on individuals who pose a threat to national security, public safety and border security", spokeswoman Jennifer Elzea said in a statement to the Washington Post.

China, Germany must do more to cut trade surpluses
Germany , along with Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Switzerland were also on the "monitoring list" in the US Treasury report. Since the president took office, North Korea has conducted five missile tests and launched eight ballistic missiles.

In the first six years of the Obama administration, the former president was accused by liberals of deporting undocumented immigrants too aggressively, but Obama sought to show he was enforcing immigration laws as he and lawmakers pursued a comprehensive immigration reform deal in Congress. The total number of immigration arrests was 16,104 for the same period in 2016.

The Post also found that the number of people arrested with no criminal records doubled, though nearly three quarters of those arrested did have criminal records (an increase of 15 percent year-over-year).

But Anabel Barron, an immigrant activist in OH, said she is facing deportation even though she is a domesticviolence victim who applied for a visa. The agency said it conducts targeted immigration enforcement in compliance with federal law and its own policy. He also lobbied Congress to create a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants and granted work permits to more than 700,000 undocumented immigrants who came to the United States as children.

In the first part of 2014, the Obama administration made 29,238 such arrests, including 7,483 non-criminal undocumented immigrants, which is roughly the same percentage of non-criminal arrests as this year.

Joanne Lin, senior legislative counsel with the ACLU told the Post, "I think the instruction is, "Go about your business" in terms of apprehending immigrants. It's wherever they can find them". A prosecutor said the presence of immigration agents in state and local courthouses, which advocates say has increased under the Trump administration, makes it harder to prosecute crime.
