Volunteers are cleaning up debris from overnight violence in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, after the fatal shooting of a man by police on Saturday triggered clashes between residents and law enforcement.

Some 100 protesters skirmished with officers Saturday night, hours after an officer shot and killed a 23-year-old man whom police said was armed and had run from a traffic stop. Some demonstrators threw objects at police cars, leaving one officer hospitalized after a brick struck him in the head, the mayor said. It's unclear whether he pointed the gun at officers before being shot several times. Officials say the man was armed with a handgun, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

Assistant Chief Bill Jessup alluded to the violence in discussing the fatal shooting.

"We understand the frustration people feel with the police community nationally". Police did not reveal the race of the 24-year-old police officer or of the man he killed, only saying the suspect has a "lengthy arrest record" and the handgun he was carrying had been stolen in March.

"The black people of Milwaukee are exhausted", Alderman Khalif Rainey said.
